Polish National Flag Day – why do we celebrate Flag Day?
Flag Day is one of those moments in the year when streets, hotels, government offices, homes, and corporate headquarters are fully draped in national colors. For businesses – especially in the event, tourism, and hospitality industries – it is also a perfect opportunity to build a brand image that is engaged and respectful of Polish history. However, before you hang a flag in front of your office or order a new batch for your agency's clients, it’s worth reminding yourself where this holiday actually came from.

What does the Polish flag symbolize?
For every Pole, the national colors are much more than just a decorative element during state ceremonies. The symbolism of the Polish flag is deeply rooted in our culture, heraldry (the study of coats of arms), and vexillology (the study of flags).
Above all, the flag is the distinguishing mark of a sovereign state and nation, symbolizing pride and identity. In Polish tradition, each of the colors carries a specific message:
- White represents purity, loyalty, nobility, and the pursuit of peace.
- Red is a symbol of fire, courage, bravery, and the blood shed in defense of the homeland.
However, this is just the beginning of the fascinating history of the Polish flag. If you want to discover the deeper meaning of our national colors and the stories behind them, check out our article: Where did the Polish flag come from?
Why is the Polish flag white and red?
Have you ever wondered, why the Polish flag is white and red,and not, for example, blue and yellow like in the case of Sweden? The answer lies in the principles of old Polish flags and coats of arms.
The colors of our flag are derived directly from the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Poland and the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. According to the rules of creating national flags, the top stripe reflects the color of the emblem (the white eagle), while the bottom stripe represents the color of the heraldic shield (the red background).
These two colors were officially recognized as national colors during the November Uprising in 1831. Since then, they have invariably accompanied Poles during the most important historical, sporting, and cultural moments.

Flag Day of the Republic of Poland (May 2nd) – Fun Facts
Flag Day of the Republic of Poland was established relatively recently, in 2004. However, the choice of the date was not accidental. There is a lot of interesting information associated with the May period:
- Two holidays in one – May 2nd is not only Flag Day but also Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad Day.
- Historical gaps – the date of May 2nd is historically a day "in between" Labor Day and the May 3rd Constitution Day. During the PRL era, it was precisely on May 2nd that the authorities ordered the swift removal of flags after May 1st, to prevent them from flying during the then-forbidden Constitution Day.
- Victory in Berlin – on May 2, 1945, Polish soldiers capturing Berlin hoisted the white-and-red flag on the Victory Column (Siegessäule).
- The flag with the national emblem – the variant of the flag with the coat of arms (which serves as an ensign on sea vessels) is legally reserved for specific institutions (e.g., diplomatic missions), as well as sea vessels and aircraft at international airports.
